Situated in Northern Kenya,it is among the semi-arid regions engulfed with pristine untouched wilderness and a seasonal river (Ewaso Nyiro River) flowing through it.This ruggedness and uniqueness has made animals evolve accordingly which brought rise to the “Special 5 animals”,Reticulated Giraffe,Beiser Oryx, Grevy's Zebra,Gerenuk and Somali Ostrich.Large herds of about 900 elephants and almost 450 species of birds are also found in this wildlife paradise.Samburu is also associated with the best selling book and award winning movie Born Free where ,conservationists Richard and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the lioness.
Well known for its large herd of red elephants ,breathtaking landscapes and serene ecology along the Galana River.The 300km yatta plateau,which is the longest lava flow in the world, makes for an adventure unlike any other in the secluded Tsavo East.Tsavo E homes the big 5 animals but the wide stretch nature of the land calls for an adventure of driving and spotting of wildlife.
It is separated from Tsavo East by a railway line and road.A highlight of this park is the spectacular Mzima springs ,where crystal clear water flows through volcanic rocks.This gives a variety of habitats including thick forest,savanna,woodland and riverine vegetation.It is home to the big 5 and has a fairly good no. of leopards.It is a true untouched wilderness.
The privately owned reserve is situated at edge of Tsavo West.This mountain Ranges belong to the Eastern Arc which boasts among the oldest ranges in the world.Endemic species such as the Purple glassed snake,Taita Falcons,taita thrush alongside the larger mammals populate the 110km2 park.Saltlick lodge inside the sanctuary is famous for being the most photographed lodge benefiting from an elevated point overlooking elephant water halls.Night game drives to view the nocturnal animals is also allowed in this sanctuary.Great stop over between Tsavo east and west.
